About
Us
Based
in Los Angeles, The “1939” Club is one of the largest and
most active Holocaust survivors organization in the world.
It takes its name from the year 1939 when Hitler invaded
Poland and changed the lives of its members forever.
It is a fraternal and charitable organization and is
tax-exempt under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue
Code.
The
Club was started in 1952 with 14 members and since grown to over
800 members strong. It
recently undertook a successful drive to recruit second
generation members, the children of “1939” Club members, so
that its legacy will continue.
The
“1939” Club is dedicated to Holocaust education,
documentation and justice.
Twenty years ago, the Club established a chair on
Holocaust studies at UCLA, the first such chair at a public
university in the country.
As a result, thousands of
UCLA students have taken a course on Holocaust studies
and many graduates students have continued their studies through
fellowships provided by The Club.
The Chair is thriving under the direction of Professor
Saul Friedlander.
The
“1939” Club contributes to many worthwhile activities and
charities in the United States and in Israel, sponsors lectures
on Holocaust issues and provides speakers to high schools and
other interested groups.
It
has also been privileged to honor those precious few - the
righteous persons - who did the right thing, while those around
them were indifferent, or worse.
Through
its education fund, it has provided family support and a college
education to Christoph Meili, the Swiss bank guard who saved
Holocaust era records from the shredder.
The
“1939” Club welcomes the membership of Holocaust survivors,
their children and grandchildren and all those who share the
goals of the Club and want to continue its legacy.
As a member you will receive (1) announcements of the
Club’s activities, (2) invitations to all of the events, (3)
the Club’s Digest, (4) the annual Yearbook and (5) other items
of interest.
